Attitude Really Is Everything

I know what you’re thinking. And I agree – the title of this post is very cliché. But I’m okay with that. Sometimes statements or ideas which we think are overly used and have lost some of their original impact are worth a second look. Really – attitude is everything!

You’ve probably seen this saying somewhere before. Maybe on a weight room’s wall or at some gymnasium. Or maybe you’ve heard it from your mom or dad when you were younger and were moping about something. Change your attitude, they might have said in order for you to get over whatever you were dealing with. Well … they were right!

Attitude, or “perspective”, is everything because it changes everything. There are few things in life that can “change” your life such as a change in perspective. Having the right thoughts about a situation can change how you feel about the situation, how you treat others in the situation and how you are able to work through the situation. Wouldn’t it be nice to have that kind of control over your life?

Yeah, it would.

And this isn’t anything new – nope. In fact, God wrote about this a long time ago in Romans:

For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,
Romans 8:6

This is more than What are you thinking? – When a situation arises that can be “death” or can be “life and peace”, How do you choose to think about this? There are two roads to take – “death” or “life and peace”. Which would you prefer? For me, it’s “life and peace” every time (although, this is an area I’m still growing in). :-)

Your thoughts are powerful because how you view something changes the reality of that something to you. The thoughts bubbling around in your head eventually become manifested in words and actions … good or bad. It’s your perspective that will make or break you. It’s your perspective that will help you to overcome or keep you trapped and alone. It’s your perspective that will pull you from despair or cause you to spiral down into it. Perspective is everything.

As obvious as all this is (and was to me) I still was blind to it some areas of my life. So, I implore the same warning to you: Check under the hood.

For me, it felt like I was losing grip on things around me – and I started to paint a picture of despair. But, a few encouraging words later, I realized that my perception, my attitude, my focus was all wrong. I could only “see” the negative. And my words and actions followed suit. Basically, you wouldn’t want to be around me.

But a change in perspective and everything else changes. And, it happens so fast too – with a little time to decompress, you can come back positive and trusting God again and with a mind set on the Spirit. That’s the Christian perspective. And it’s life and peace.

Not ignorant or foolishly thinking, but thinking with God in mind, with a “spiritual perspective”. Mind on the spirit.

Yeah, I’m really hitting this hard. And that’s because this is a cliché statement, which means it registers in your mind when you hear it as “I’ve heard that – I know, I know.” and is filed away under “No need to listen.” somewhere in the gray matter. So I’m hitting it hard.

Attitude – your perception – is everything.
