As a Christian, is it possible to lose your salvation? Is it true that “Once saved you will always be saved, no matter what you do?” Is this a lie of the Devil or a Truth of God’s Word?
This question crosses Christian’s minds and can cause great fear in a Christian’s life. I’d like to show you, from God’s Word, how a Christian cannot ever lose salvation once saved.
In the Bible, God does tell how to be saved and in very plain language:
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (Emphasis Added)
–Romans 10:9
Yes, it really is that simple. And what’s more, “shalt” to God is an absolute. It’s a formula — do this and you shalt absolutely get that. This is how we are saved and we don’t lose that salvation. Let’s look at another section:
In whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Emphasis Added)
— Ephesians 1:13,14
As we break these verses down, we’ll see the greatness and permanence of our Salvation:
- We “were sealed“. I think of a seal on a letter from years ago. This word “sealed” is the greek word “sphragizo“, which is defined as “to stamp (with a signet or private mark) for security or preservation (literally or figuratively); by implication, to keep secret, to attest — (set a, set to) seal up, stop“. It comes from the greek word “sphragis“, which is defined as “a signet (as fencing in or protecting from misappropriation); by implication, the stamp impressed (as a mark of privacy, or genuineness), literally or figuratively — seal“.
- “Which is the earnest of our inheritance“. Holy spirit is the down payment of our Christian inheritance! The word “earnest” is the greek word “arrhabon“, which is defined as “a pledge, i.e. Part of the purchase-money or property given in advance as security for the rest — earnest“
- “Until the redemption of the purchased possession“. I think of a coupon that you can redeem at a store. The word “redemption” here is the greek word “apolutrosis” which is defined as “(the act) ransom in full, i.e. (figuratively) riddance, or (specially) Christian salvation — deliverance, redemption“. The words “purchased possesion” is the greek word “peripoiesis which is defined as “acquisition (the act or the thing); by extension, preservation — obtain(-ing), peculiar, purchased, possession, saving“.
Wow, I love how visual God is in describing our Salvation! Because of God’s great love for us and His awesome grace, we have salvation at such a small cost to us through the sweet Gospel of Christ Jesus.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
— Romans 1:16
As we strive to be workmen of God’s Word, understanding administrations and to whom the Bible is written, the scriptures become very clear regarding our untouchable salvation as Christians.
Let’s rejoice in this incorruptible downpayment of our guaranteed salvation!

Great verses and they are all true!
To add some clarity to the verses provided, the context of these verses needs to be better understood. As they are now, they seem to be referring to either Israel’s unbelief, man’s attempt to “complete” salvation through the flesh/works, parallels to the “end times” or the book of Hebrews (which is not addressed to the Church at large, but to the “Hebrews” — although we can learn from/find truth in the book).
Our salvation is untouchable!
Thanks — I appreciate the response!
Found this page which I think says a lot more than I did regarding losing salvation:
